সংস্কৃত ‘যতি’ (অর্থ: ‘সংযমী’, ‘বিরতি/থামা’) থেকে বাংলা ‘যতি’; ছন্দে বিরতির অর্থে এটি প্রচলিত।
From Sanskrit ‘यति’, meaning ‘self-restrained/ascetic’ and also ‘pause/stop’; in Bengali it became established especially in the sense of a metrical pause (caesura).

‘যতি’ শব্দটি প্রধানত ছন্দবিদ্যা ও অলংকারশাস্ত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়—পদ্যপাঠে নির্দিষ্ট স্থানে শ্বাস/অর্থের স্বাভাবিক বিরতি বা থামাকে ‘যতি’ বলা হয়; কবিতা আবৃত্তি, গান বা পাঠে ছন্দ ঠিক রাখতে যতি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। প্রসঙ্গভেদে ‘যতি’ দ্বারা সংযমী সন্ন্যাসী/মুনিকেও বোঝানো হয়।
