‘স্বদেশ’ (নিজ দেশ) + ‘-ি’ প্রত্যয় থেকে গঠিত; উনিশ শতকের শেষ ভাগ ও বিশ শতকের শুরুতে ব্রিটিশবিরোধী বয়কট ও দেশি পণ্য প্রচারের প্রেক্ষিতে শব্দটি বিশেষ রাজনৈতিক অর্থে ব্যাপক প্রচলিত হয়
Formed from ‘স্বদেশ’ (one’s own country) + the suffix ‘-ি’; the term gained wide political currency in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in connection with anti-British boycotts and the promotion of indigenous goods
