সংস্কৃত ‘সহ’ (একসঙ্গে) + ‘মর্ম’ (অন্তর/হৃদয়/ব্যথা-অনুভূতি) + ‘-তা’ প্রত্যয় থেকে গঠিত; অর্থাৎ ‘অন্যের মর্ম/অনুভূতিকে সাথে নিয়ে অনুভব করার গুণ’
