ইংরেজি ‘cent’ শব্দটি লাতিন ‘centum’ (অর্থ ‘একশ’) থেকে এসেছে; আর ‘scent’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত ইংরেজি শব্দটি পুরোনো ফরাসি ‘sentir’ (গন্ধ পাওয়া) থেকে উদ্ভূত—বাংলায় উভয়ই ‘সেন্ট’ হিসেবে উচ্চারিত/লিখিত হতে পারে

Definition

‘সেন্ট’ বলতে সাধারণত (১) কোনো পূর্ণ সংখ্যার ১০০ ভাগের ১ ভাগ (যেমন টাকা/ডলারের শতকের এক ভাগ), (২) সুগন্ধি বা আতরের সুবাস/গন্ধ, এবং (৩) বিশেষ করে মার্কিন ডলারের ১০০ ভাগের ১ ভাগ মুদ্রা একক বোঝায়
