আরবি ‘ربط (rabṭ)’ থেকে উদ্ভূত বলে ধরা হয়; অর্থগতভাবে ‘বাঁধা/সংযুক্ত করা’ থেকে ‘ভালোভাবে ধারণ/আয়ত্ত করা’ অর্থে বাংলা ব্যবহারে বিকশিত

‘রপ্ত’ বলতে কোনো বিষয়, বিদ্যা বা কৌশলকে অনুশীলন ও অভ্যাসের মাধ্যমে এমনভাবে আয়ত্ত করা বোঝায় যাতে তা সহজে ও স্বচ্ছন্দে ব্যবহার করা যায়
