‘অ-’ (নিষেধ/অভাব) উপসর্গ + ‘তাল’ (ছন্দ/মাত্রা/বিট); অর্থাৎ ‘তাল নেই/তালবিহীন’

From the negative prefix ‘অ-’ (absence/not) + ‘তাল’ (rhythm/beat), literally “without rhythm/beat”

Definition

গান বা বাদ্য পরিবেশনে যখন তাল ঠিক থাকে না, ছন্দ ভেঙে যায় বা সময়মতো মাত্রা ধরা হয় না—সেই অবস্থা বা গুণকে ‘অতাল’ বলা হয়

‘Atal’ describes a state or quality of being out of rhythm—when timing/beat is not kept properly in singing or instrumental performance, causing the metre to break or the beat to be missed
