‘কষা/কষ’ (রুক্ষ-আঁশটে স্বাদ বা কষট স্বাদ) + ‘ভাব’ (অবস্থা/ধর্ম/অনুভূতি) থেকে গঠিত; বাংলা ব্যবহারে স্বাদগত ‘কষটতা’ ও রূপকার্থে ‘রুক্ষ মনোভাব’ বোঝাতে প্রচলিত
