আরবি ‘জিম্মা/ধিম্মা’ (দায়, দায়িত্ব, আশ্রয়/সুরক্ষার অধীনতা) শব্দ থেকে ফারসি-উর্দু পথে বাংলা ‘জিম্মি’ (জিম্মাদার/দায়ী ব্যক্তি; পরে কথ্য ব্যবহারে ‘বন্দি/পণবন্দি’) অর্থে প্রচলিত
From Arabic ‘dhimma/jimma’ (liability, responsibility, being under protection/guarantee), via Persian–Urdu into Bengali ‘জিম্মি’ (responsible/answerable person; later commonly used for ‘captive/hostage’)
Definition
যে ব্যক্তিকে অন্য পক্ষ চাপ সৃষ্টি, মুক্তিপণ আদায়, দাবি মানানো বা নিরাপত্তা-জামিন হিসেবে জোর করে আটকে রাখে তাকে জিম্মি বলা হয়; কথ্য ব্যবহারে কোনো পরিস্থিতি বা শর্তের কাছে বাধ্য হয়ে পড়াকেও ‘জিম্মি’ বলা হয়
A person forcibly held to pressure others, extract ransom, compel demands, or serve as security/bail is called a hostage; in colloquial use, it can also mean being compelled or held at the mercy of a situation or condition
