আরবি ‘حِفَاظَة’ (হিফাযা/হিফাজাহ) ও সংশ্লিষ্ট ‘حِفْظ’ (হিফ্‌য: রক্ষা/সংরক্ষণ) মূল থেকে বাংলায় ‘হেফাজত’ শব্দের ব্যবহার গড়ে ওঠে।

কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, সম্পদ বা অধিকারকে নিরাপদে রাখা, রক্ষা করা, দেখাশোনা করা বা কর্তৃপক্ষের তত্ত্বাবধানে সংরক্ষণ করাকে হেফাজত বলা হয় (যেমন: পুলিশি হেফাজত, আদালতের হেফাজত, শিশুর হেফাজত)।
