বাংলা ‘ঘুমাই’ এসেছে ক্রিয়া ‘ঘুমানো’ থেকে; ‘ঘুম’ শব্দটি মধ্য-ইন্দো-আর্য পর্যায়ের শব্দভাণ্ডার থেকে বাংলায় এসেছে এবং ‘নিদ্রা’ অর্থে প্রতিষ্ঠিত

‘ঘুমাই’ হলো ক্রিয়া ‘ঘুমানো’-এর প্রথম পুরুষ একবচন বর্তমানকাল/অভ্যাসসূচক রূপ; অর্থ—আমি ঘুমাই, অর্থাৎ আমি নিদ্রায় যাই বা ঘুমানোর অভ্যাস আছে
