বাংলা ‘গাল’ (মুখ/গাল) ও ‘চাপা’ (চেপে ধরা/ঢেকে রাখা) — অর্থাৎ মুখ চেপে কথা থামিয়ে দেওয়া বা বিষয় চাপা রাখা—এই ধারণা থেকে গঠিত কথ্য-রূপ
Formed from Bengali ‘গাল’ (cheek/mouth area) + ‘চাপা’ (to press down/conceal), conveying the idea of silencing by pressing the mouth and thus keeping a matter suppressed; a colloquial formation

যে কথা, ঘটনা বা তথ্য ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে চাপা দিয়ে রাখা হয় বা প্রকাশ পেতে দেওয়া হয় না; বিশেষ করে অন্যায়, কেলেঙ্কারি বা ভুল ঢাকতে ‘গালচাপা’ করা হয়
