বাংলা ‘দোকান’ (অর্থ: পণ্য বিক্রির স্থান) শব্দের সঙ্গে কর্ম/পেশা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত প্রত্যয় ‘-দারি’ যুক্ত হয়ে ‘দোকানদারি’ গঠিত

দোকান চালিয়ে বা দোকানকেন্দ্রিকভাবে পণ্য কেনাবেচা, ব্যবসা পরিচালনা, এবং লাভের উদ্দেশ্যে বাণিজ্যিক লেনদেনের কার্যক্রম; কথ্য ব্যবহারে কখনও কখনও ‘অতিরিক্ত লাভ-নিয়েই ব্যস্ত থাকা’ বা ‘খুচরো বুদ্ধির বাণিজ্যভাবনা’ বোঝাতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়
