Origin & History
From Latin vitriolum (“vitriol”), from vitreus (“glassy”), because some sulphates formed glass-like crystals; later extended figuratively to mean corrosive speech.

Definition
Vitriol originally refers to sulphuric acid (and historically to certain metal sulphates). In modern figurative use, it means bitter, scathing, abusive speech or writing; as a verb, it means to attack someone with such harsh words, or (in technical contexts) to treat metal with dilute sulphuric acid (pickle).
