From Middle English title, from Old French title, from Latin titulus (“inscription, label, title”).

Definition

“Title” can mean (1) the name of a book/film/song or the heading of a piece of writing, (2) an honorific or rank used with a person’s name (Mr., Dr., Sir), (3) legal ownership rights to property (clear title), (4) a numbered division in a law/book (Title II), or (5) the championship status awarded to a winner.
