Origin & History
From Latin testūdō meaning “tortoise,” also “tortoise shell; a shell-like covering,” later applied to the Roman shield formation because of its resemblance to a tortoise’s shell.
लैटिन testūdō से, जिसका अर्थ “कछुआ” तथा “कछुए का खोल/खोल जैसा आवरण” था; बाद में कछुए के खोल जैसी दिखने के कारण यही शब्द रोमन ढाल-रचना (shield formation) के लिए भी प्रयुक्त होने लगा।
Definition
Testudo refers mainly to (1) a tortoise (notably in Latin/scientific or historical contexts) and (2) the Roman “tortoise” formation where soldiers held shields overhead and on the sides, creating a protective shell against missiles; it can also mean a domed/shell-like protective structure.
टेस्टूडो का प्रमुख अर्थ (1) कछुआ/स्थल-कछुआ (विशेषकर लैटिन/वैज्ञानिक या ऐतिहासिक संदर्भों में) और (2) रोमन सेना की “कछुआ-रचना” है, जिसमें सैनिक ढालें ऊपर व किनारों पर ओवरलैप करके मिसाइलों से बचाव हेतु एक खोल (shell) जैसा आवरण बनाते थे; विस्तार से इसका अर्थ गुंबदनुमा/खोल जैसी सुरक्षात्मक संरचना भी हो सकता है।
