From Middle English/early modern English squat ‘to sit/crouch’, probably of Scandinavian (Old Norse) origin; related to the idea of sitting heavily or low.

Definition

To lower your body by bending the knees and hips (often for rest, exercise, or to avoid being seen), or to sit/crouch in that position; also, to live in a property without permission (squatting), and as an adjective it can describe something/ someone short and broad.
