Slave

/sleɪv/

Origin & History

From Middle English slave, from Old French esclave, from Medieval Latin sclāvus, originally meaning “Slav” (since many Slavs were enslaved in medieval Europe).

Definition

A slave is a person held in slavery—owned or controlled by someone else and made to work, often without pay and without basic rights; in a broader sense it can mean a person who is entirely dominated by a habit, desire, or system (e.g., a slave to addiction).
