From Middle English slate, from Old French esclate/esclete ‘splinter, chip’, related to the idea of splitting into thin plates.

Definition
Slate is most commonly a fine-grained metamorphosed rock that cleaves into thin layers and is used for roofing and tiles; by extension it can mean a (formerly common) slate writing board, the grey-blue “slate” color, a written record of debts (“put it on my slate”), or a list/panel of candidates in an election.
Slate प्रायः एक सूक्ष्म-दानेदार रूपांतरित चट्टान है जो पतली परतों में आसानी से फटती है और छत/टाइल आदि में काम आती है; इसी से अर्थ-विस्तार होकर यह (पहले प्रचलित) लिखने वाली पटिया/स्लेट-बोर्ड, नीला-धूसर “स्लेटी” रंग, उधारी का हिसाब (“मेरे खाते/उधार में लिख लो”), या चुनाव में उम्मीदवारों की सूची/पैनल भी दर्शाता है।
