From Hindi/Urdu śāl (a fine woollen cloth), likely ultimately from Persian šāl; adopted into English in the 17th–18th centuries via trade.

Definition
A shawl is a warm, often decorative cloth worn over the shoulders (and sometimes the head/neck), especially by women; in a specialized sense it can mean the loose skin fold under a bloodhound’s neck, and as a verb it means to wrap someone in a shawl.
शॉल एक गर्म (अक्सर सजावटी) कपड़ा होता है जिसे कंधों पर और कभी-कभी सिर/गर्दन पर ओढ़ा जाता है, विशेषकर महिलाओं द्वारा; एक विशेष अर्थ में यह ब्लडहाउंड कुत्ते की गर्दन के नीचे ढीली चमड़ी की तह भी हो सकता है, और क्रिया के रूप में इसका अर्थ किसी को शॉल से लपेटना/ओढ़ाना होता है।
