From Old Norse “skor” (‘notch, mark; a score of twenty’), related to Germanic words meaning ‘cut/notch’; later extended to counting by tally marks, and then to points in games and to musical notation.
यह शब्द पुरानी नॉर्स भाषा के “skor” (अर्थ: ‘कट/निशान; बीस का समूह’) से आया माना जाता है; जर्मैनिक मूल के ‘काटना/खांचा बनाना’ अर्थ वाले शब्दों से संबंध है। बाद में गिनती के लिए टैली-मार्क (निशान) से अर्थ बढ़कर खेल के अंक/स्कोर और संगीत-लिपि (म्यूज़िकल स्कोर) तक फैल गया।
Definition
“Score” most commonly means the total points/goals in a game or test results; it can also mean twenty, a notch/mark made by cutting, or the written music for a film/play, and as a verb it means to get points, to mark/cut a surface, or to set music for a film.
