अंग्रेज़ी के rub + down (रगड़ना + नीचे/पूरी तरह) से बना; 18वीं शताब्दी के आरंभ में प्रचलित, पहले व्यायाम के बाद घोड़े को रगड़कर सुखाने/साफ़ करने के अर्थ में, बाद में लोगों और वस्तुओं की मालिश/सफ़ाई के लिए भी उपयोग होने लगा।

रुबडाउन (रगड़कर मालिश/पोंछना) शरीर या किसी सतह को ज़ोर से और अच्छी तरह रगड़ने की क्रिया है, जो अक्सर नहाने या व्यायाम के बाद शरीर को सुखाने, मांसपेशियों को राहत देने, या तेल/लोशन लगाने तथा सफ़ाई के लिए की जाती है।
