From the Algonquian (Powhatan/Virginia Algonquian) word aroughcun meaning “(it) scratches with the hands,” entering English in the 17th century.

Definition
Raccoons are omnivorous, mainly nocturnal mammals (Procyon lotor) that adapt well to forests and cities, using dexterous front paws to forage for food and often searching in trash or near water.
