Origin & History
From an Algonquian language (via Powhatan), meaning roughly “one who scratches (with its hands),” later adapted into English as raccoon.
यह शब्द एक एल्गोंक्वियन भाषा (पोहाटन के माध्यम से) से आया माना जाता है, जिसका अर्थ लगभग “अपने हाथों से खुरचने/कुरेदने वाला” है; बाद में अंग्रेज़ी में ‘raccoon’ के रूप में प्रचलित हुआ।
Definition
A raccoon is a medium-sized, mostly nocturnal mammal from North America. It eats both plants and animals (omnivore) and is known for its black mask-like markings around the eyes and its striped tail; it is scientifically called Procyon lotor. The term may also refer more generally to other closely related species in the genus Procyon or the family Procyonidae.
रैकून उत्तर अमेरिका का मध्यम आकार का, प्रायः रात्रिचर स्तनपायी है। यह सर्वाहारी होता है और आँखों के आसपास काले ‘मास्क’ जैसे निशान तथा छल्लेदार (धारीदार) पूँछ के लिए प्रसिद्ध है; इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम Procyon lotor है। कभी-कभी यह शब्द व्यापक अर्थ में Procyon वंश या Procyonidae कुल के निकट संबंधी प्रजातियों के लिए भी प्रयोग होता है।
