Origin & History

From Middle English punte/punt ‘flat-bottomed boat’, from Old French ponte, from Latin/pont- ‘bridge’ (related to pontoon); the sports verb developed from the idea of kicking/propelling.

Definition

Punt has several meanings: (1) in sports, to drop a ball from the hands and kick it before it touches the ground; (2) a kick made that way; (3) a flat-bottomed boat moved with a pole, common on rivers; (4) informally, to take a chance/attempt, especially to place a bet.
