From Latin proscaenium, from Greek proskḗnion ‘space in front of the skēnē (stage building)’, from pro- ‘before’ + skēnḗ ‘stage building’.

Definition
In theatre architecture, the proscenium is the front part of the stage closest to the audience—often the area in front of the main curtain and framed by the proscenium arch; historically it could also refer to the architectural front (e.g., a row of columns) of the stage building.
