From Latin pontificātus/pontificārī, related to pontifex (“high priest, pope”), later used for speaking like a pope—authoritatively and dogmatically.
लैटिन pontificātus/pontificārī से, जो pontifex (“महायाजक/पोप”) से जुड़ा है; बाद में इसका अर्थ ‘पोप की तरह अधिकारपूर्ण और दोगले-निश्चयात्मक ढंग से बोलना’ हो गया।
Definition
To express opinions in a lengthy, confident, and often arrogant way, as if one’s views are unquestionably correct; originally also meant to act as a pope or as a bishop (more literal/rare).
