From Italian Pisanello, the nickname of the artist Antonio di Puccio Pisano (literally ‘the little Pisan’), from Pisa + diminutive suffix -ello.

Pisanello refers to the Italian Renaissance artist Antonio di Puccio Pisano, celebrated for creating some of the earliest and most influential Renaissance portrait medals and for elegant, detailed drawings and paintings.
