From pantomime, ultimately from Greek pantómimos (“imitating all”), from pan (“all”) + mimos (“mime/imitator”); later developed in Latin and European theatre traditions.

Definition
“Pantomimes” can mean multiple things: (1) mime performers who act mainly through gestures; (2) the genre/tradition of theatre based on mime (including the British children’s pantomime with slapstick, topical jokes, and fairy-tale plots); (3) the act of gesturing without speaking; and as a verb form it means ‘to gesture/act something out silently.’
