मध्य अंग्रेज़ी के out(line) से, जिसका अर्थ 'बाहरी रेखा/आकृति' था; यह out + line से बना है। बाद में 'सार/योजना' वाला अर्थ इस विचार से विकसित हुआ कि रेखाचित्र में केवल मुख्य रेखाएँ दिखाई जाती हैं।
