अंग्रेज़ी outline (out + line) से; 17वीं शताब्दी में ‘बाहरी रेखा/आकृति’ के अर्थ में प्रचलित हुआ और बाद में ‘संक्षेप/रूपरेखा/योजना’ के अर्थ विकसित हुए।
