From Latin oscillare (“to swing”), from oscillum (“a little face; small mask”), related to oscillum used for small hanging figures that swung in the wind.

Definition
Oscillations are repeated movements or changes that go back and forth between two points or states, often regularly (as in a pendulum) or irregularly (as in prices).
