From Middle English mop(pe), probably from Middle Dutch/Low German sources related to a bundle or tuft; later extended to the cleaning implement and figurative senses (hair, grimace).
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी mop(pe) से, संभवतः मध्य डच/लो जर्मन के ऐसे शब्दों से संबंधित जिनका अर्थ ‘गुच्छा/लट’ था; बाद में अर्थ का विस्तार ‘सफाई का पोछा’ और रूपक अर्थों (घने बाल, चेहरा बनाना) तक हुआ।
Definition
A mop is a floor-cleaning implement with an absorbent head attached to a handle; to mop means to clean or wipe a surface using it (and sometimes figuratively to wipe away). It can also mean a thick mass of hair, and in older usage a grimace or a hiring fair for servants.
मॉप/पोछा फर्श साफ़ करने का औज़ार है जिसमें डंडी के सिरे पर कपड़े/धागों का शोषक गुच्छा लगा होता है; ‘to mop’ का अर्थ पोछे से सतह को साफ़/पोंछना (कभी-कभी रूपक रूप में ‘पोंछ देना’) भी है। इसका अर्थ अनौपचारिक रूप से घने बाल भी हो सकता है, और पुराने प्रयोग में ‘चेहरा बनाना/विकृत भाव’ या नौकरों की भर्ती का मेला भी।
