From micro- (“small”) + -cytic (from Greek kytos/κύτος “cell, hollow vessel”); used in medical terminology to describe small cell size, especially of red blood cells.

Definition
Microcytic describes red blood cells (erythrocytes) that are smaller than normal, commonly seen in certain types of anemia such as iron-deficiency anemia and thalassemia; it is often associated with a low mean corpuscular volume (MCV).
