मध्य अंग्रेज़ी maze (अर्थ: ‘भ्रम, चक्कर, उलझन’) से, संभवतः पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी *amasian (‘भ्रमित/हक्का-बक्का करना’) से; बाद में यह शब्द भूल-भुलैया जैसे ढाँचों के लिए भी प्रयुक्त होने लगा।

A maze is a structure or area with many branching paths and dead ends, intended to make it difficult to find the way out; figuratively, it means a confusing and complicated situation or set of rules.
