Origin & History
From match + book; match (Old English mæcca, “companion,” later “a stick for lighting fire”) + book (Old English bōc). The sense refers to a booklet-like fold of cardboard holding matches, popularized in the late 19th–early 20th century.
match + book से बना; match (पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी mæcca “साथी”, बाद में “आग जलाने वाली तीली/माचिस”) + book (पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी bōc)। अर्थ में ‘किताब जैसी’ मोड़ी हुई गत्ते की पुड़िया में तीलियाँ होना शामिल है; यह प्रयोग 19वीं सदी के अंत और 20वीं सदी की शुरुआत में लोकप्रिय हुआ।
