From Middle English match(e), from Old English mǣcca (“mate, companion”) for the sense ‘equal/partner’; the ‘fire-stick’ sense developed later, influenced by Old French mesche (“wick”).
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी match(e) और पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी mǣcca (“साथी/जोड़”) से ‘जोड़ी/बराबरी’ वाला अर्थ आया; ‘माचिस की तीली’ वाला अर्थ बाद में विकसित हुआ, जिसमें पुरानी फ़्रांसीसी mesche (“बाती”) का प्रभाव माना जाता है।
