From Latin contestari (“to call to witness; to make a subject of dispute”), via Old French contester; later used for both “competition” and “dispute.”
लैटिन contestari (“गवाह बुलाना; किसी बात को विवाद/विवाद का विषय बनाना”) से, पुरानी फ़्रेंच contester के माध्यम से; बाद में “प्रतियोगिता” और “विवाद/चुनौती” दोनों अर्थों में प्रयोग होने लगा।

“Contests” can mean (1) competitive events where people try to win, or (2) formal challenges to a decision, result, or claim (e.g., in court).
