From “linesman” (line + man), recorded in English from the late 19th century; originally for a person responsible for lines (boundaries or cables), later specialized in sports for an official watching the lines.
“Linesman” (line + man) से बना शब्द, जिसका प्रयोग अंग्रेज़ी में 19वीं शताब्दी के उत्तरार्ध से मिलता है; मूल रूप से रेखाओं/लाइनों (सीमा या केबल) के लिए जिम्मेदार व्यक्ति के अर्थ में, और बाद में खेलों में सीमा-रेखाएँ देखने वाले अधिकारी के रूप में विशिष्ट अर्थ विकसित हुआ।
Definition
“Linesmen” is the plural form of “linesman.” It commonly refers to (1) sports officials who watch boundary/side lines and signal when the ball or play is out, especially in football/soccer, hockey, tennis, etc.; and (2) workers who install and maintain overhead power or telecommunication lines.
“Linesmen” शब्द “linesman” का बहुवचन है। इसका प्रयोग आम तौर पर (1) खेलों में उन अधिकारियों के लिए होता है जो सीमा/साइड लाइन पर नजर रखते हैं और गेंद या खेल के आउट होने का संकेत देते हैं (जैसे फुटबॉल, हॉकी, टेनिस आदि); और (2) उन कर्मियों के लिए जो बिजली या दूरसंचार की ऊपर से गुजरने वाली लाइनों की स्थापना व रखरखाव करते हैं।
