From Greek koinḗ (dialektos) meaning ‘common (dialect)’, from koinós ‘common, shared’; used in modern linguistics for a common dialect formed through leveling and mixing.

Definition
A koine is a common language or dialect that develops (or is adopted) as a shared means of communication among speakers of different local dialects, often used in trade, administration, or literature; most famously, Koine Greek served as the lingua franca of the eastern Mediterranean and is the language of much of the New Testament.
