From Japanese 北九州 (Kitakyūshū), literally “North Kyushu,” referring to its location in the northern part of Kyushu.

Kitakyushu is a large Japanese city formed by the merger of several cities (including Kokura and Yahata) and is known for heavy industry, ports, and transport links in northern Kyushu.
