यह शब्द लैटिन indulgentia (अर्थ: दयालुता, ढील/रियायत) से आया है, जो indulgere (अर्थ: कृपा करना, झुक जाना/मान जाना, प्रदान करना) से बना है। यह मध्ययुग के उत्तरार्ध में पुरानी फ़्रांसीसी के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया।
Definition
Indulgence refers to (1) giving in to desires or pleasures (often more than is good), (2) being lenient or overly forgiving toward someone, or (3) a special allowance/permission; in historical Christian use, it can mean remission of temporal punishment for sins.
Indulgence का अर्थ है (1) इच्छाओं या सुखों के आगे झुक जाना/अत्यधिक भोग (कभी-कभी नुकसानदेह), (2) किसी के प्रति ढील देना या जरूरत से ज्यादा माफ़ करना, या (3) विशेष छूट/अनुमति; ऐतिहासिक ईसाई संदर्भ में यह पापों के दंड/प्रायश्चित में छूट के अर्थ में भी आता है।
