लैटिन *idioma* (ग्रीक *idiōma* के माध्यम से) से, जिसका अर्थ “विशिष्ट/निजी अभिव्यक्ति-शैली या विशेषता” था; यह ग्रीक *idios* (“अपना; निजी”) से बना है।
Definition
An idiom is a fixed phrase whose meaning cannot be understood by translating the individual words literally (e.g., “spill the beans” means to reveal a secret). In a broader sense, it can also mean the characteristic way a particular language or community expresses ideas.
मुहावरा ऐसे स्थिर/निश्चित शब्द-समूह या वाक्यांश को कहते हैं जिसका अर्थ शब्दों के शाब्दिक (literal) अर्थ से नहीं समझा जा सकता (जैसे “spill the beans” का मतलब “राज़ खोल देना” है)। व्यापक अर्थ में यह किसी भाषा/समुदाय की विशिष्ट अभिव्यक्ति-शैली को भी दर्शाता है।
