From Greek hystéra (“womb”) → hysterikós (“of the womb”), via Latin and French; later used for “hysteria” and then more generally for uncontrolled emotion or very funny.

Definition
Hysterical describes someone who is overwhelmed by emotion and cannot control laughter, crying, or panic; it can also mean something is extremely funny (“hysterical joke”). In older medical usage it referred to “hysteria,” a term now considered outdated and misleading.
