Origin & History
From Middle English humour, from Old French umor/humor, from Latin humor (“moisture; bodily fluid”). The later senses developed from medieval medicine (the four humours) and then broadened to ‘temper’ and ‘comic quality’.
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी humour से, जो पुरानी फ़्रेंच umor/humor से और आगे लैटिन humor (‘नमी; शरीर-द्रव’) से आया। बाद के अर्थ मध्ययुगीन चिकित्सा के ‘चार humours’ से विकसित हुए, फिर ‘मिज़ाज/स्वभाव’ और आगे ‘हास्य/मज़ाक’ के अर्थ में व्यापक हो गए।
Definition
Humour mainly means the quality of being funny or making people laugh (sense of humour). It can also mean someone’s temporary mood or disposition (especially a bad mood). In older medical theory it refers to bodily fluids thought to affect health and temperament, and in anatomy it refers to fluids in the eye (aqueous/vitreous humour). As a verb, to humour someone means to indulge or go along with them to keep them calm or pleased.
‘Humour’ का मुख्य अर्थ है ‘हास्य’—ऐसी गुणवत्ता जो मनोरंजक हो और लोगों को हँसाए (sense of humour)। यह किसी व्यक्ति के अस्थायी मिज़ाज/मनोदशा (खासकर खराब मूड) के लिए भी प्रयोग होता है। पुराने चिकित्सीय सिद्धांत में यह शरीर के द्रवों (चार humours) को दर्शाता है, और नेत्र-विज्ञान में आँख के भीतर के तरल (aqueous/vitreous humour) के लिए आता है। क्रिया के रूप में ‘to humour’ का अर्थ है किसी को शांत/प्रसन्न रखने के लिए उसकी बात मान लेना या साथ देना।
