Homer is primarily a proper noun: the name of the legendary ancient Greek poet to whom the epics the Iliad and the Odyssey are traditionally attributed; it is also used as a surname and, less commonly, as a common noun meaning a homing device that guides toward a signal/target (e.g., in navigation).
