From hen + hawk; used in English from the 18th–19th centuries for hawks believed to prey on poultry; later also influenced by/overlapped with the term "chicken hawk."

A (usually informal) name for a hawk thought to attack chickens or other poultry; it is not a strict scientific species name and is often used loosely in rural speech.
