From Hawaiian haole, historically glossed as “foreigner” (often interpreted as “without breath” in folk etymology); originally referred to foreigners/strangers and later commonly to white people in Hawaii.
हवाईयन शब्द haole से; ऐतिहासिक रूप से इसका अर्थ “विदेशी/पराया” माना गया। लोक-व्युत्पत्ति में इसे कभी-कभी “बिना साँस के” के रूप में समझाया जाता है; पहले यह सामान्य रूप से बाहरी/अजनबी के लिए था, बाद में हवाई में प्रायः श्वेत लोगों के लिए प्रयुक्त होने लगा।
