From Middle English 'gripe(n)' meaning 'to seize, clutch' and later 'to cause pain'; related to Old Norse 'grípa' ('to grasp'). The sense 'complaint' developed later from the idea of being pained or seized by discomfort.

Definition
Gripes are repeated complaints or expressions of dissatisfaction, often about small or persistent problems; in another sense, gripes can mean sharp pains (especially stomach cramps).
