From Middle English gloaten, probably related to Middle Low German glōten (“to stare, look”) and the idea of staring with greedy satisfaction; the modern sense developed as “to dwell on with triumph.”

Gloating describes an obvious, often unpleasant kind of satisfaction someone shows when they have won or when someone else has lost or suffered.
