From Latin contritus, past participle of conterere (“to crush, wear down”), later used in the sense of being “crushed in spirit” with remorse; entered English via Old French.
यह शब्द लैटिन contritus (conterere का भूतकालिक कृदंत—“कुचलना/घिसकर नष्ट करना”) से आया, बाद में “मन से टूट जाना/पश्चाताप से दब जाना” के अर्थ में प्रयुक्त हुआ; पुरानी फ़्रेंच के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया।

Contrite describes a person who feels deep, genuine regret for something wrong they have done and often expresses apology and a desire to make amends.
